More than 1,000 people are taking a step towards a new career by booking a start-up market pitch as part of a UK-wide Love Your Local Market campaign.
Launched on 23 June, the two-week campaign will see more than 300 local markets offering special deals and events to attract new shoppers and encourage budding entrepreneurs to start up new businesses by setting up a market stall as a low-cost route into retail.
More than 1,000 start-up pitches have been booked, with deals including reduced cost stalls and “tables for a tenner”. Some locations will be offering expert advice form experienced market traders to support new entrants to the markets sector.
Adam Corbally, a former market trader and now a successful businessman, who appeared on this year’s The Apprentice on BBC TV, is backing the campaign. He said: “I hope as many people as possible get stuck in and have a go at running a stall – if I can make it a career, so can you.”
Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said: “For any local entrepreneur who’s dreamt of starting a business, now is the time to try it and take advantage of the special trader rates on offer – it doesn’t come much better than a tenner to start a new business.”
