When you’re about to employ a worker for the first time, you need to take certain steps in preparation, and getting ready for automatic enrolment is just one of these.

Under the Pensions Act 2008, every employer in the UK must put certain staff into a pension scheme and contribute towards it. This is called ‘automatic enrolment’. If you employ at least one person you are an employer and you have certain legal duties.

But from the 1st October any new PAYE schemes will not have a staging date for auto-enrolment pensions, they will have a duties start date from when the first employee is paid, therefore as soon as your first employee begins employment, you should be ready to comply with your legal duties, you should make sure you know what you need to do to be ready when their duties start.
